Most responsible dog owners know quite a bit about their dogs. There are, however, three very important topics that many dog enthusiasts know little or nothing about:
1) Local dog laws – breed restrictions, leash restrictions, pet limits, and more are often different from municipality to municipality. Strict leash laws in one town are sometimes much more relaxed in the next town over. For those of us who like to responsibly play disc with our dogs… the next park over can mean the difference between receiving tickets or not receiving tickets. It can mean the difference between owning up to 3 dogs or owning up to 6 dogs, or owning the breed you cherish most.
2) Local disease and parasite threats – not every place has a Lyme disease problem or heart worm problem big enough to warrant year-round treatment. Not putting pesticides on your dog’s shoulders or in their stomachs, when they really don’t need it, can save you a lot of money while keeping them free from exposure to unnecessary toxins. Speak to your Vet before making any major decisions here, but feel free and empowered to explore the options.
3) Perhaps most importantly, first aid. Petsitusa.com had a great article on this a few weeks back. Check it out here for great ideas from mobile apps to classroom courses to e-learning options. And if you’ve taken a course specifically in the Portland, OR area that you feel is worth sharing, please let us know about it by emailing us at: info@luciddogtraining.com – this is important information to spread. Thanks, in advance.
